Six Fishes founder, Cara Frank wants acupuncture treatment to be affordable and accessible to everyone. Many people’s budgets are stretched thin, leaving little extra for self-care. This fact, combined with exciting growth of Philadelphia’s Gray’s Ferry Triangle neighborhood, served as the inspiration to open a friendly, community centered practice: Six Fishes Neighborhood Acupuncture was born!

Six Fishes Neighborhood Acupuncture provides private acupuncture treatments along with affordable, semi-private and mid-priced acupuncture treatments. Modeled after the hospital clinics in China, semi-private acupuncture treatments will be provided on massage tables separated by drapes to provide full body acupuncture treatments at an affordable rate.

New to SFNA:Therapeutic Massage. We are delighted to offer this service to the community.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does semi-private treatment mean?

Treatments are given in a peaceful open room with massage tables that are separated by drapes. Soft music plays, a fish tank bubbles in the background, cell phones are turned off and voices are kept low. Although there are other people near you, everyone is resting or sleeping. It is a very peaceful, sunny and beautiful space. To insure your privacy, we do a short intake in a private consultation room before your treatment.

Can I get custom herb formulas at Six Fishes Neighborhood Acupuncture?

Six Fishes Neighborhood Acupuncture carries a large selection of herbal formulas in pill, liquid and granular form. If a custom formula is the best treatment option for you, then the formula will be filled by China Herb Company located at 750 South 15th Street. From there, you can pick it up, it can be shipped or it can be delivered to Six Fishes Neighborhood Acupuncture the next day.

What if I want private acupuncture treatment?

In addition to the semi-private part of the practice, we offer two private acupuncture treatment rooms for those who prefer complete discretion and privacy.

A distinct advantage of Six Fishes is the flexibility to choose between treatment options. For instance, you might have a complicated condition and prefer private treatment. Then, when your symptoms are stabilized, you can be treated in the semi-private side of the practice for maintenance. We maintain electronic record keeping, making it easy for different practitioners to follow your case history.

I’m not sure if I need private or semi-private treatment. How do I decide?

We are happy to help you make this decision. If you have a complicated medical history, additional privacy insures that we are able to ask sensitive questions and that you are able to answer them without fear of being overheard. We like to provide ample time for careful differential diagnosis and treatment and we want you to have the best care possible. Private acupuncture insures that complex cases receive the appropriate time and attention.

That having been said, many people have routine complaints that work exceptionally well in a group setting. Sprains and strains, acute colds, headaches, and more are easily treated in an affordable group setting. What’s more, there is tremendous healing power in a group setting, where people are resting in a quiet healing space together. Some people prefer it, finding it comforting and meditative.

Are you accessible to handicapped people?

In January of 2016 I had an hysterosalpingogram (HSG). This test showed that both of my fallopian tubes were blocked at the midsections. Although never diagnosed, I believe the blockages were due to endometriosis, which caused scar tissue around my fallopian tubes. The fertility specialist that performed the HSG told us that we would never conceive naturally, ie without IVF. I came to Cara in May of 2016 with blind hope. The initial consultation was in depth and covered many aspects of my health, emotional state and lifestyle. I finally felt that I was being listened to about my health issues and concerns. She guided me through dietary changes and supplements after that initial 2 hour appointment. Then we started with acupuncture and herbs and I soon noticed a difference with my periods. We monitored my cycles together. Through the whole process I never let myself lose hope and Cara was my cheerleader through it all! In Jan of 2017 I felt it was time to get another HSG to see if any progress had been made. To schedule this I needed to see a fertility specialist. We went to a different medical office and this specialist took a brief glance at my chart from my previous fertility testing and continued to council me on IVF as my only option. The fertility doctor was reluctant to order me another HSG, but finally agreed to write an order for the testing. My GYN performed the HSG in February of 2017 and to everyone’s surprise, BOTH tubes were completely OPEN. Despite having turned 40, we conceived naturally the next month and now I have a very active (downright wiggly) 5 month old. If it wasn’t for Cara Frank my daughter wouldn’t be here. I can never thank her enough for my little fish!
